10/1 Public Hearing on Proposed Smoking Ban

The No Smoking sign, designed by one of the me...Image via WikipediaFrom Ruth Wahtera:

As many of you know TFAC and the American Cancer Society have been working with the County Legislatureto pass a law that prohibits smoking on all county owned or leased property. It looked like all of the Dems supported the resolution until just recently when another watered down resolution was proposed by Legislator Ronk. His proposal is only a ban within 50 ft. of county building entrances and a much weaker penalty system.

There will be a public hearing held on Legislator Ronk's weaker law on October 1st at 6:30pm in the Ulster County Office Building. We need speakers to come and support the full smoking ban
proposed by Legislator Rob Parate, Majority Leader Brian Cahill and the Public Health Committee.

There was also some discussion about exempting Ulster County Community College from the law.

If you can come and speak, you will need to sign-up prior to the public comment session. The sign-up sheet is in the front. Your speech should be short ( less then 1-2 minutes long). I am hoping to have everyone that came to the public hearing last month speak as well as some other volunteers.

Thank you for helping to make Ulster County a healthier and safer place to live and work!

WHEN:
WEDNESDAY, OCT, 1ST,
PLACE:
ULSTER COUNTY OFFICE BUILDING, 244 FAIR STREET, KINGSTON
6TH FLOOR
TIME:
6:30pm

Regards,

Danielle Heller

Health Care Forum Planned for October 4th

Postponed until spring

What's Up With Health Care?

We haven't heard much about it during this election cycle, but we know that the number of uninsured people grows daily. We can expect it will grow even faster as families have to contend with their shrinking purchasing power.

On October 4th, the AAUW Kingston Branch is hosting a public policy forum to explore the dimensions of the problem and the two most cited health care proposals -- one government run, the other through the private sector.

So, hold the date! We hope you will join us. More details will follow.

New Arts and Wellness Program

Through the Benedictine Oncology Support Program in Kingston, NY

Janine Fallon-Mower sent this information for posting.

Anyone in the Hudson Valley who has ever received a diagnosis of breast cancer can take free professionally-taught, outpatient workshops in the visual, literary, and performing arts-- visual art, dance, writing, photography, drama, puppetry, and more. The workshops will run several times between February 2008 and January 2009 at Benedictine Hospital.

“Many published research studies have shown that when breast cancer patients call upon their creativity in the forms of imagery, music, movement, and the written and spoken word, it often leads to reduced pain and anxiety, enhanced self-esteem, improved ability to make treatment decisions, closer communication with family members and one’s healthcare team, and a self-assessed overall improvement in quality of life,” says licensed Creative Arts Therapist Elissa Bromberg

The first two workshops scheduled:

Following your Heart: An Art Making Workshop

with Syd Hap - a Master Sculptor with a Masters in Art Therapy

Two Saturdays,10:30am – 12:30pm
February 9 & 16
Material fee $10

Art Maker as Healer: Creating Symbols of Personal Power

with Elissa Bromberg, licensed Creative Arts Therapist and board-certified Art Therapist
